I first got into New Age spirituality in around 2013 when I had been struggling and looking for something. What I was looking for I didn’t really know but I knew there was more to life, and that I was quite broken and needed healing. This desire to heal emotional wounds from childhood led me into life coaching, and around the same time I read ‘The Power of Now’ by Eckhart Tolle.
This book is huge in the New Age world, and teaches Buddhist meditation techniques, the root from which mindfulness came, but Tolle repackages these teachings as conscious awareness: becoming more present in the moment.
This was revolutionary for me and started me on a journey of what is called a spiritual awakening in New Age language. I even remember thinking I had found my Bible in this book, although I had never picked up the actual Bible and nor did I have any desire to do so. I saw Christianity as oppressive and patriarchal, as a by product of being born into the second wave of feminism along with family and societal anti Christian conditioning. The Power of Now quotes the Bible throughout, but twisting passages to suit the New Age ideology.
I then spent around 8 years in the New Age as both a spiritual consumer seeking healing and spiritual growth, alongside working professionally as a Spiritual Life Coach. I dabbled with all sorts of things during this time, but God kept me safe from danger – as much as I tried I never seemed to have such intense spiritual experiences as others, or attain Spirit Guides. I am of course very grateful for this now, although at the time it felt disappointing.
During my time as a Spiritual Life Coach I focused on helping overwhelmed Mums who were on a spiritual journey of healing whilst raising their children, using teachings from ‘The Power of Now’ alongside other spiritual practices such as meditation and visualisation. My clients were women like me, but a few steps behind. The main forum for this was a Facebook group called Mindful Mamas.
Once I left the kingdom of darkness for God’s Kingdom of light, and Jesus became my Lord and Saviour, the impulse to help people a few steps behind me returned and I set up a new Facebook group. This group had the intention of helping people still caught in the deceptive snare of New Age spirituality. I called it The Bridge. The bridge from the New Age to Jesus.
The group grew fast to many hundreds of people, and as I was still a baby Christian, I quickly got help from a couple of mature Christian men, to help hold the space, answer questions and shield me from attacks which came to me online. This is when I first started realising about the spiritual battle we are in, and how doing this work was frontline.
The Bridge continued to grow and in 2025 we attracted some funding which allowed me to put more time towards the ministry and during that year we published a multi-author testimony book- New Age to Jesus: Ten True Stories of Redemption. As well as putting on our first New Age to Jesus Conference in Stroud. We also continue to support seekers and ex New Age Christians in the Facebook group., and have further New Age to Jesus Conferences planned around the UK as well as plans for evangelising at New Age events.
When I first got into the New Age spirituality it was relatively fringe, and most people I met were seeking healing of some kind. They were on a spiritual journey to become whole and heal and grow. Whereas the occultic/witchcraft darker end of the spectrum attracts people wanting power, the New Age world I was in was more about presence, healing and wholeness, it all had a love and light veneer. As of course the enemy comes as an angel of light!
What I have noticed is that from roughly around 2019/2020 the New Age has gone mainstream and is no longer fringe. You can easily find things such as a spell colouring book for children on supermarket shelves, tarot cards on the shelves of high street bookshops, or tote bags decorated with satanic symbology in mainstream shops. Whereas before these items were only to be found in specialist shops.
Social media is also part of this zeitgeist. Nowadays it is an algorithm driven trend pushed out in front of the eyes of Gens Z and A. So it is no longer just fringe, and people seeking healing or power, but whole swathes of people are being caught up into the New Age. It is now, sadly, often the first place people go for healing whereas in the past that would have been the church.
There are a myriad of different doorways into it, or entry points. From an innocent massage and the practitioner offering Reiki, a counsellor offering hypnotherapy, or how yoga and meditation are completely accepted as helpful for wellbeing.
I describe the New Age as a spiritual eat all you want buffet, where over time, people get pulled deeper and deeper into more and more. People are free to create their own spiritual personal brand based on what takes their fancy. Which could be some mystical eastern beliefs, combined with elements of Paganism and goddess spirituality, and some crystals thrown in for good measure.
There are endless opportunities to add to our plates through different courses, working with different practitioners and attending different events. Tarot cards, energy medicine, tantra, plant medicine and shamanism, and many more things are all shiny and seductive on the New Age buffet table.
For me personally life coaching was a big element of my New Age journey. Coaching itself is not automatically New Age but the desire for a dream life brings in a need for the law of attraction/manifestation to create said life and the money needed to sustain it.
New Age life coaching is often a very self obsessed endeavour. In fact the whole New Age ideology is self obsessed as self is firmly on the throne. Self forgiveness, self inquiry, self care, self realisation, self self self. It’s exhausting having it all on our shoulders to do.
The people in that world are ultimately seeking God, and are genuine seekers of spiritual truth, whether they are broken people seeking healing, or caught up in trends pushed out through social media. They all know they are missing something, and are eating plastic food which satiates to a degree but ultimately is never satisfying for the soul and spirit.
Before broken-ness led to spiritual seeking, I was firmly in the materialism camp with a touch of agnosticism. But throughout my time before, and during New Age seeking, I was quite anti religion, especially Christianity. New Agers are open to most things ‘spiritual’ except the God of the Bible.
Many New Agers do love Jesus, but of course one of the many false versions of Jesus promulgating in the New Age – an enlightened spiritual teacher, ascended master or political revolutionary. Also, they have a real affinity with Mary Magdalene, with many channelled books written about Jesus and Mary Magdalene.
This is one opportunity for evangelistic endeavors; that a love for a (false) Jesus is a potential open door. Another is that there are people in that world who are more dedicated to real truth than comfort or fitting in, who will be among those open to information about the Gospel at the God ordained time.
In the testimony of both a prominent ex witch and a high ranking ex satanist, they describe Christians showing them love that was different to anything they had experienced before, which completely disarmed them. They then go on to say how when they then met God and His love, it was the same as the love they experienced from those good and faithful ambassadors of Christ. This is a wonderfully simple way to witness to New Agers and Occultists.
People caught in these deceptions are usually well intended, and have beautiful hearts, they are just being led down spiritually exciting but ultimately dead end paths of destruction. They are usually very dedicated in their spiritual journeys, desiring healing, as well as a desire to ascend to higher planes of consciousness. Ultimately they are chasing an illusion. I would go so far as to call the New Age a works based religion.
Testimonies are a great evangelism tool, and there are hundreds if not thousands of New Age to Jesus testimonies on YouTube with more appearing probably daily. In this social media age, ex New Age Christian influencers also reach many people, and dramatic testimonies, or testimonies of people well known in the New Age world who come to Christ are powerful.
Just recently two very well known Tarot Card readers publicly came to the Lord. I know at least one of them had hundreds of thousands of followers. Their conversions have attracted huge amounts of negative comments from New Age followers, but there will also undoubtedly be many people whose curiosities will be piqued, and those who value truth will find it.
