The following was sent to us by a former Mormon missionary who became a Christian while on his mission. He subsequently met with a mission president to explain his new faith and had the opportunity to give a wonderful witness to the truth. The remarkable change in his life came about because he met Christians while on his mission who took the trouble to witness to him. He is known to Reachout Trust but has asked to remain anonymous. This is his story.

A good deal has happened since I first found Jesus and left the Mormon Church. I want to encourage Christians to share their faith with Mormons, especially missionaries. As my own story shows, it is worthwhile taking the time to love them and tell them about Jesus

I was a missionary for the Mormon Church when I left and was given a great opportunity to share my new faith with a mission president. The following is an account of what happened during the interview we had.

I was quite nervous about explaining what had happened but I felt that it went very well. I didn’t prepare anything beyond my own testimony but looked to God who gave me a great illustration that I want to share with you.

I began with the question from the Book of Alma 5:14 in the Book of Mormon:

“And now behold; I ask of you my brethren of the church, have ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?”

This is a question that every Mormon wishes to answer yes to. Not only Mormons have this desire to be change into the likeness of Jesus and God the Father. But in this case the most important question is, how do I get changed? How do I get transformed?

I put a glass, containing dirt, in front of the mission president and put a little water in it. Than I explained, “The glass is our body, the water is our soul and spirit and the dirt is sin in our life. So what we do is try to pick out the dirt to get the “water” (our inner being) clean and pure. Can we ever remove all the dirt? Could all the time we have on earth give us the opportunity to get all the dirt out of us? With good works, all the duties we do, all the keeping of the commandments”

His answer was no, we couldn’t remove it all. I asked him again, ” So how do we get changed then?”

I turned to Ezekiel 36:25-27, where it is written,

“Then I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgements and do them.”

This scripture teaches us that GOD WILL do it. He is the giver of a new heart and the new spirit and he causes us to walk in his ways. I took a jug with clean water and poured the clean water into the glass containing the dirty water. What happened? The dirty water flowed out of the glass When the clean water flowed into the glass the dirty water was washed out of the glass.

It was a great picture! I turned to one other scripture, 2 Cor.3:16-18

“But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the spirit and where the spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lords glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the spirit.”

There was one other point to make about how we get changed. It concerns when we look at Jesus, when we look at his Glory. I asked him a rhetorical question, “What is his Glory?”

I turned to a verse from the Book of Moses, 1:39 (Pearl of Great Price)

“…. For behold this is my work and my glory to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.”

The Glory of God is the work on the cross. However, to Mormons the cross has nothing to do with Glory. But in Moses it says that the Glory and the work of God is to bring to pass the eternal life of man .How is this done? Through Jesus!

After I read this verse I went to Ephesians chapter one and counted all that we posses IN JESUS. Chapter one is just great. It explains in an incredible way what Jesus did for us and who I am IN HIM.

After all these verses I came to the conclusion and to the answer of how we experience a mighty change in our hearts, how we receive His image and get spiritually born of God. The centre of all is JESUS and Jesus alone. When we trust in HIM and what HE did for us we will experience this.

After an hour of talking I was surprised at what I had been able to do and so thankful for the inspiration I received by God’s grace.

Once, some Christian friends told me about this might change in their hearts. They explained to me about how Jesus is able to change people’s lives. At that time I became spiritually born of God and I experienced this mighty change in my heart .I will never live without this, the real Jesus, and I simply want to share with others how he has change my life.
